| Esta dissertao visa anlise do conceito de fineza de amor em 14
sermes do Padre Antnio Vieira nos quais o conceito fornece a chave de
articulao de seus principais argumentos. O corpus estabelecido pode ser dividido
em trs grupos, segundo o tema da pregao, determinado pelo calendrio
litrgico. Assim, compem o primeiro grupo os sermes do Mandato, pregados
nos anos de 1645, 1650, 1655 (manh), e 1670. Nestes sermes, o assunto principal,
retirado do evangelho de So Joo, o amor de Cristo pelos homens no
momento em que morre para a redeno de todo o gnero humano. este amor,
juntamente divino e humano, o nico capaz de obrar finezas, segundo Vieira.
Com relao ao calendrio litrgico, estes sermes, assim como os do segundo
grupo, referem o perodo da Quaresma. Do segundo grupo de sermes constam os
sermes da Primeira Sexta-Feira da Quaresma, que tm como assunto principal
o mandamento de Cristo, amai vossos inimigos, retirado do evangelho de So
Mateus. Os termos de sua argumentao contrapem o mandamento ao dio do
inimigo. Nestes sermes, a fineza aparece predicada aos exempla, como por
exemplo Jos, do Velho Testamento, que foi vendido por seus irmos no Egito e
depois chegou a ser rei. Cabero nestas anlises consideraes sobre os casos
exemplares, retirados da Sagrada Escritura, principalmente do Velho Testamento.
Por fim, o terceiro dos grupos de sermes estudados constitudo pelos Sermes
Consagrados Glorificao de So Francisco Xavier em que consta o mais amplo
vocabulrio associado ao conceito da terminologia central deste estudo. Em
especial, o trabalho considera os seguintes sermes de Xavier: Sonho Segundo;
Sonho Terceiro; Sermo Stimo: Doidices; Sermo Oitavo: Finezas; Sermo
Nono: Brao; Sermo Dcimo da Sua Canonizao e Sermo Undcimo do Seu
Dia.
Segundo Sebastin Covarrubias Orozco, no Tesoro de la Lengua Castellana o
Espaola, dicionrio do sculo XVII, o termo fineza significa: 7) Fineza
significa algunas veces agudeza; 8) otras, perfeccin de la cosa; 9) en trmino
cortesano cierta galanteria y hecho de hombre de valor y honrado trmino. Por
esta definio, Vieira trata especificamente das duas primeiras acepes; a ltima,
referente poesia produzida na corte e, portanto, referente s letras profanas do
perodo, poderia ser utilizada apenas para contraposio entre o tratamento dado
ao mesmo termo na oratria sacra.
Resta ainda ressaltar que, para as anlises, sero utilizadas as principais
preceptivas retricas do sculo XVII, Agudeza y Arte de Ingenio, de Baltsar Gracin
e Il Canocchiale Aristotelico, de Emanuele Tesauro. |

| The aim of this thesis is the analysis of the concept of loves fineness in 14
sermons by the Priest Antonio Vieira in which the concept is the interpretative key
in his main arguments. The established corpus can be divided in three groups,
following the lectures theme, determined by the liturgical calendar. In this way is
composed the first group of the Sermons of Mandate, prayed in 1645, 1650, 1655
(morning) and 1670. The main subject of these sermons, from Saint John gospel, is
the love Christ had by the men in the moment he dies for the redemption of the
humans. Following Vieira, this is the only love, human and divine at the same
time, capable of doing fineness. Relating the liturgical calendar, these sermons,
as the ones in the second group, refer to the Lent period. The Sermons of the first
Lents Friday are in the second group, which main subject is the Christs
commandment, love your enemies, from Saint Matthew gospel. The expressions
in his argumentation go against the commandment, of hating the enemy. In these
sermons, the fineza appears characterized to the exempla, for example Jose
(Joseph), from the Old Testament, which was sold by his brothers and became
king. In these analyses will be done considerations about the example cases,
from the Holy Bible, mainly from the Old Testament. Finally, the third group of
sermons is composed by the Sermons Glorifying So Francisco Xavier, where is
found the deepest vocabulary associated to the main terminology of this work.
This study consider, in special, the following Xaviers sermons: Sonho Segundo;
Sonho Terceiro; Sermo Stimo: Doidices; Sermo Oitavo: Finezas; Sermo
Nono: Brao; Sermo Dcimo da Sua Canonizao e Sermo Undcimo do Seu
Dia.

Castellana o Espaola, XVII century dictionary, the word fineness means: 7)
Fineza significa algunas veces agudeza; 8) otras, perfeccin de la cosa; 9) en
trmino cortesano cierta galanteria y hecho de hombre de valor y honrado
trmino.
From this definition, Vieira consider specifically the first two meanings; the last
one, referring to the poetry produced on the court and hence referring to the
poems of the period, could be used only as an opposite meaning to the same word
used on the holy speechs.

Gracin and Il Canocchiale Aristotelico, by Emanuele Tesauro. |
