| Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo evidenciar o procedimento retórico-poético da agudeza como
efeito que especifica a poesia lírica seiscentista de Portugal, por um lado, como imitação da poesia
antiga e, por outro, como poesia que admite metáforas agudas compostas segundo o engenho e a arte
do discurso poético coevo. Os gêneros poéticos vários são ali definidos pela suavidade e jocosidade
com que amplificam afetos e lugares-comuns que compõem as convenções da poesia do elogio e do
vitupério, gêneros mais abrangentes das modalidades líricas. O corpus poético da tese tem como
espelho editorial as antologias Fênix Renascida e Postilhão de Apolo, sem prejuízo de outras
antologias de interesse. Os principais conceitos teóricos da tese são assim definidos pela leitura de
importantes artes poéticas e retóricas do período elegido, preceitos igualmente conhecidos do público
cortesão e discreto dessa poesia. O estilo mediano da lírica se apresenta em função do gênero em que o
poema é composto. A metáfora, artifício de linguagem mais propício à expressão das semelhanças
encontradas pelo poeta, é aqui considerada modelo eminente da agudeza por favorecer o conceito,
imagem formada no pensamento. A poesia lírica seiscentista mantém como finalidade primordial o
deleite do interlocutor (maravilha), condicionado por uma noção precisa de decoro que reivindica
também o fim de proveito à poesia culta do século XVII contra-reformado. Assim, a metáfora aguda
da poesia seiscentista em Portugal realiza a ação poética de maior amplificação das noções de decoro e
verossimilhança que a tradição do gênero lírico comportou como poesia de imitação. |

| This research seeks to evince the wit, a rhetorical and poetic procedure, as the effect that specifies the
Portuguese lyric poetry of the 1600s; on one hand, as an imitation of the old poetry; and, on the other
hand, as a pattern of poetry that bears acute metaphors worded according to the wit and the coeval art
of poetic discourse. The various poetic genres are then defined by their suavity and jocosity with which
they render more intense the affections and common places that frame the conventions of the poetry of
praise and vituperation, the weightiest genres of the lyric modes. The anthologies Fênix Renascida and
Postilhão de Apolo form the poetic corpus of this thesis, and that does not blur the absence of other
exemplary works. The thesis’ main theoretical concepts are then defined by the reading of important
poetic and rhetorical arts of the chosen period, which are precepts equally familiar to the discreet court
audience of such poetry. The plain style of the lyric is presented in relation to the genre the poem fits
under. The metaphor, the artifice of language most appropriate to the expression of the similarities
found by the poet is here deemed as the eminent model of wit, as it favors the concepto, an image
formed in the thought. The lyric poetry of the 1600s keeps as its main goal the delight of the
interlocutor (the wonder) conditioned by a precise notion of decorum that vindicates the secondary aim
of exemplum to the cult poetry of the Contra-reformation of the seventeenth century. Thus, the acute
metaphor of the Portuguese poetry of the 1600s brings about the poetic action that mostly amplifies the
notions of decorum and verisimilitude that the tradition of the lyric genre has embodied as poetry of
imitation. |
