| One of the major functions of the CIFA Sub-Committee for Lake Tanganyika, which was established in 1977, is to facilitate the regional development of Lake Tanganyika fisheries. Recognition of the need to strengthen regional integration of fisheries management effort led to the establishment of the Lake Tanganyika Research Project (LTR) in the early nineties.
