Kurzfassung auf Deutsch: Current knowledge regarding the status of skipjack, yellowfin, bigeye, albacore, and bluefin tunas is reviewed. All of these tunas with the exception of skipjack are nearly fully exploited or overexploited. There is widespread concern that this situation is the result of too much fishing capacity, and that as the world’s tuna fleets continue to grow the ability of managers to implement and sustain effective measures to conserve the tuna resources will be jeopardized. This document reviews current measures being taken to address the problems of excess fishing capacity, discusses means of measuring capacity, and outlines options for controlling capacity in the future.
